Teeth grinding
(bruxism)
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching are often caused by overactivity of the chewing muscles (especially the masseter). This can lead to jaw pain, headaches, tightness and tooth wear. With botulinum toxin type A we can temporarily reduce muscle activity, helping the jaw relax and often reducing symptoms.

Average 3 – 4 months
About the treatment
“We reduce overload in the jaw muscles — without ‘turning off’ normal chewing function.”
- Focused on masseter/jaw muscles
- Medically responsible
- Subtle, controlled dosing
- Review & fine-tuning
Who is this for?
- Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (day or night)
- Tension or pain around jaw/face
- Headaches linked to jaw tension
- A strong/square jaw due to prominent masseters (optional aesthetic effect)
Important to know
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces jaw muscle strength/activity. It doesn’t always address the root cause (stress, sleep, bite). Sometimes combining with a night guard (dentist), stress reduction or physiotherapy is most effective. During the consultation we’ll advise what makes sense for you.
What to expect
When will I notice results?
Often after 3–7 days. Optimal effect around 10–14 days.
How does it feel?
Your jaw often feels less ‘tight’. Biting may feel slightly less strong.
How long does it last?
Average 3–4 months. Repeat treatment may be needed.
Our approach
1. Consultation
We discuss symptoms, habits (clenching/grinding) and assess jaw muscles.
2. Plan
We decide whether the masseter (and possibly temporalis) is treated and choose dosing.
3. Treatment
Small injections into the jaw muscle(s). Duration ± 15–20 minutes.
4. Review
After 2–4 weeks we evaluate and fine-tune if needed.
Aftercare
- Stay upright for the first 4 hours (avoid lying flat).
- Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours.
- Do not massage or rub the jaw area for 24 hours.
- Avoid sauna/steam room and alcohol in the first 24 hours.
Safety & possible side effects
Possible: redness, mild swelling or a small bruise. Sometimes temporary chewing fatigue or a change in jaw tension. Usually mild and temporary. If you have concerns, contact us.
Frequently asked questions
Will my face look slimmer?+
In some people the masseter can become less prominent as it relaxes. This is not the primary goal, but it can be a side effect.
Can I still chew normally?+
Yes. The goal is relaxation, not disabling normal function. You may notice you use less force.
Do I still need a night guard?+
Sometimes. A guard protects your teeth. Botulinum toxin mainly helps muscle overactivity. We’ll advise what’s best for your situation.
How often do I need to repeat it?+
On average every 3–4 months, depending on your response and symptoms.
